The mobile virtual reality (VR) market is already becoming crowded. Google has the low end of the scale covered with its Google Cardboard DIY head-mounted display (HMD) while Oculus VR and Samsung are soon to release arguably the highest-profile mobile device in the Gear VR. There are plenty of options that fit in between these two. Joining them today is a unique new device named Figment VR that doubles as a phone case. Creator Quantum Bakery has today launched a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for the iPhone-based device.
Unlike other mobile HMDs, which are essentially boxes that users slot a smartphone into, Figment VR at first resembles a protective phone case for the back of the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. However users can easily slide some triggers to fold out a pair of lenses that extend round to the front of the device to face the screen. This system can be seen in practise in a video below.
The kit is said to support apps that are compatible with the Google Cardboard, including content from 360 degree video companies such as Jaunt VR and Vrse. Figment VR is also planning to launch its own app to support augmented reality (AR), detecting physical objects and providing information about them as well as allowing players to control digital representations of them.
“Until now, the VR and AR markets have been unattainable for most people,” said Zi Wang, Founder of Figment VR, “We’re thrilled to offer an easy-to-use product that completely changes the way we access virtual reality and share the experience with others. People can now take VR with them everywhere they go.”
Figment VR’s Kickstarter campaign will run until 12th January 2016. Those interested can act early and get a kit for an early bird price of $49 USD. MSRP retail will be $79. VRFocus will continue to follow the kit closely, reporting back with the latest updates on the device.
