2015 is winding down, but not without at least one more reveal from Oculus VR. Earlier this week it was confirmed that the company behind the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) will be making a ‘special announcement’ at The Game Awards, Geoff Keighley’s annual awards ceremony that looks back at the past 12 months in the videogame industry while also looking forward with trailer debuts and more. News from Oculus VR is always guaranteed to turn heads, and speculation about what the company is preparing is running wild across the internet.
So, what exactly is the company planning to reveal?
Let’s get the obvious out of the way first; it’s not a launch for Oculus Rift pre-orders. The kit is set to arrive within the first three months of next year and early orders have been promised before the end of 2015. That would make this seem like the most obvious announcement, but company founder Palmer Luckey has already confirmed this isn’t the case. This also confirms that pricing is off the table, as the Oculus Rift designer has previously stated that news will come with the pre-order launch. Though the same hasn’t been said for a specific release date, it’s likely that this is the case.
So we’re not likely to see any release details, then. We also know a lot about the hardware itself, including specs and the bundled Xbox One controller, thus there doesn’t seem to be much left for the company to talk about on this send, save perhaps for its position-tracked controller, Oculus Touch.
Looking at the line-up for other announcements at The Game Awards suggests that we should expect something closer to a new videogame release, or perhaps another look at some the already announced projects. So far we’ve seen titles from Insomniac Games, Gunfire Games, Sanzaru Games, Carbon Games, Coatsink Software, High Voltage Software and many, many more with very little media released for them. Fresh trailers or gameplay demos for each would be more than welcome, given the only coverage seen so far is from event previews.
There’s also a healthy amount of projects we don’t know anything about. Oculus VR has confirmed that it’s working with the likes of Square Enix, Ready at Dawn, 4A Games, Signal Studios and more, but we’re yet to see their titles. It could well be, then, that the company is planning to reveal at least one new title at the event, which would certainly be welcome news for those looking to bury themselves in VR content when the device finally arrives next year.
Whatever the announcement ends up being, you can be sure that the eyes of the VR community will be squarely fixed on The Game Awards when they kick off in LA on 3rd December 2015. VRFocus will be covering the show too, so make sure to check back for any VR announcements, Oculus VR or otherwise.
