When the HTC Vive virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) finally starts to arrive at the doors of VR enthusiasts tomorrow, 5th April 2016, it will come with three free pieces of content. One of these is Fantastic Contraption from Northway Games. Over the past few weeks the developer has caught the attention of VR fans with an intriguing series of trailers that utilise mixed reality (MR) to communicate the message of VR. Just ahead of the title’s launch, the team has released another example of this.

The release trailer for Fantastic Contraption can be seen below. It shows how players will interact with the title by placing those on-screen within the virtual environment itself, as well as showing them in their real world location with whatever they’re building also on display. As the developer explains in the footage, the goal of the title is to get a pink ball into a pink zone, which is done by building a vehicle or some other device to transport it there. Players use the HTC Vive’s position tracked controllers to create these machines.

For those wondering how to build their own trailer in the same style as this one, Northway Games has even offered up a tutorial on its official website. It offers everything from studio and game set up to syncing the camera and more. Fantastic Contraption is also due to hit the Oculus Rift HMD with support for the Oculus Touch position tracked controllers, though it’s not yet clear when this version of the title will be launching.
