Virtual reality (VR) may finally be hitting the consumer market towards the end of this year and early in 2016, but the technology is far from perfect. Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) creator Oculus VR would be the first to admit that even with the first consumer version of its device due in a few months’ time. Both the company and owner Facebook are committed to solving VR’s problems, though, and the latter has even revealed that it has a ‘five – 10 year’ plan on just how it’s going to do that.

Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer recently revealed as much in an interview with Fast Company. “We’ve got a five- to 10-year R&D road map for Oculus that’s very clear about what problems we need to go take down and how we’re going to do it,” he revealed. “And so we’re just going to build better and better sensors and hardware and software that’s going to allow you to do more and more and that’s going to create these amazing experiences.”

No doubt these plans will include further iterations of the Oculus Rift beyond the kit that’s launching in Q1 2016. Oculus VR has ambitions to refine its hardware in a number of ways include size, weight, display resolution and much more. In fact, Oculus VR Chief Scientist Michael Abrash recently stated that VR displays would need to reach highs of 16k in order to be equal to retinal resolution. There’s a long way to go in perfecting VR, then, but rest assured that Oculus VR and Facebook are both committed to making sure it happens.

VRFocus will continue to follow the VR industry closely, reporting back with the latest updates on its progress.
