The fashion world has been an unlikely proponent of virtual reality (VR) technology. VR tour site YouVisit collaborated with Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Russia during October and November 2015, and fashion brand Rebecca Minkoff captured its Fall 2015 show in VR to name a few. Now fashion photographer Ruvan Wijesooriya has directed Unstitched, an editorial shoot in 360-degree immersive video.

Created in partnership with New York-based VR content agency Virtualize, part of the team who helped produce Sundance Film Festival VR experience Giant, Unstitched aims to put viewers inside a professional fashion shoot. “The majority of my work is self-motivated/self-assigned. I decided I could do a fashion shoot and showcase it in a proto-behind-the-scenes kind of way in VR,” reports The Creators Project.

On Wijesooriya’s website he explains the shoot: “In the first scene, as the 360 camera falls to the floor, the viewer feels the crash; in the last scene, the models crash into each other and disappear. The viewer is placed in the middle of a photoshoot, models running rampant and jesting at the disconnect between the intimacy of virtual reality, the posturing of the contemporary fashion still and the limitations of the flatscreen.”

The VR experience will be released online on 8th, February 2016, for New York Fashion Week, and VRFocus will continue to follow the fashion industry’s continued use of VR technology as more projects are created.
