Virtual reality (VR) fans flocked to pre-order the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) earlier in the year but, for many, that isn’t all there is to buy. A huge amount of VR enthusiasts will also need to update their PCs to match the minimum specification for running the Oculus Rift, and creator Oculus VR is trying to make this a simple and more affordable process with its Oculus Ready PCs. These are rigs that meet the spec and are labelled as much, and are being offered as bundles with the Oculus Rift itself, with those taking advantage of the offer getting discount codes.
Recently, Oculus VR has revealed the ETA for when these discount codes will arrive for each of the 20 countries that the Oculus Rift is set to ship to in late March 2016. The schedule for codes for both Alienware and Dell XPS discounts was posted on a new addition to the Oculus Support page. It reveals that the codes will go live in the US and Canada later this month, with the UK, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Sweden following on in March 2016. Australia, Japan, and New Zealand are estimated for Q2 2016, while Finaled, Iceland, Norway and Poland should be in Q3 – Q4.
The Oculus Rift itself will start shipping on 28th March for those that got in early pre-orders or purchased the device’s first development kit (DK1) through the 2012 Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for it. Pre-orders are currently backdated all the way to July, and the kit is available for $599 USD. Those that pre-order the kit are going to get a free copy of EVE: Valkyrie and four months of Unity Pro. Everyone that picks up the kit will also get Lucky’s Tale, an Xbox One controller and the Oculus Rift.
