Unreal Engine 4 creator Epic Games has become closely connected with the virtual reality (VR) industry over the past few years. Its popular development middleware is being used by a huge number of studios to create experiences for head-mounted displays (HMDs) such as the HTC Vive, PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift, while the company has also been working on its own tech demos for the latter device. But what’s next for Epic Games and VR? Fans may well find out later this week, as the company is teasing some ‘exciting’ news to be revealed.

Unreal Engine 4 Senior Community Manager Chance Ivey has taken to the middleware’s official forums to alert fans to a Twitch stream set to take place at 14:00 ET on 4th February 2016. The stream will feature Ivey, Technical Director Mike Fricker, Senior Designer Nick Donaldson, and, intriguingly, Epic Games Founder and CEO, Tim Sweeney himself. “We’ve got some exciting new things to discuss with you all this Thursday,” Ivey teased for the upcoming event. “Stay tuned more more [sic] information and mark your calendars!”

Just what the announcement could be is unknown. The company impressed journalists, developers and more with the reveal of its latest tech demo, Bullet Train, at the Oculus Connect 2 developer conference back in September 2015, and VR fans have since been hoping that the experience could get a full release. The piece is a first-person shooter in which players use the Oculus Touch controllers to realistically wield weapons, and seems well-suited for a VR videogame. Epic Games itself has teased that this could be a possibility, though it’s important to note that this news was shared through Unreal Engine 4 channels. With that in mind, it could be that Epic Games has new updates to share regarding VR compatibility for its middleware.

Whatever the news, VRFocus will be sure to keep you up to date on what the company has to reveal.
