For the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2016 in San Francisco today, Epic Games, the developer behind middleware development engine Unreal Engine has been giving its keynote speech. In February the company revealed over its weekly Twitch stream that developers would be able to create in virtual reality (VR) with a new VR Editor. In the press conference today the company has announced the VR Editor source code is now available on Github.

The VR Editor is not a standalone product, but an addition to Unreal Engine 4 so studios already know how to use it. The software is compatible with the HTC Vive motion-tracked controllers and with Oculus Rift’s, Oculus Touch controllers as well.

Unreal Engine is used by studios around the world and since Epic Games let developers use the software for free, its seen over 1.5 million downloads over the last year.

VRFocus will continue to bring you the latest VR details from Epic Games, as announcements are made.
