If you love immersing yourself in virtual reality (VR) experiences but have your own ideas that you’d like to explore there are several paths that can be explored. You can go down the route of using videogame development engines like Unreal Engine from Epic Games or Unity by Unity Technologies. While these are professional grade applications for building videogames and are free to download and start experimenting with, Valve has now released another option for creating VR worlds.

Destinations Workshop Tools has launched today on Steam Early Access for free, letting users create, share, and explore both real and imaginary places in VR. This initial beta release features a set of content creation tools giving users the ability to construct worlds and share them on the Destinations Workshop, then explore them with the included Destinations viewer, using The Source 2 tool set used internally by Valve.

The software features example Destinations created with photogrammetry, and an example map that users can copy and modify highlighting how to use Source 2 tools to add interactivity to a Destination.

Destinations Workshop Tools works with any head-mounted display (HMD) that supports OpenVR, including HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. Valve has left things open, looking to get as much feedback from the Steam community as possible, stating: “We have many ideas for feature additions in the pipeline, but we’d love to hear from our community: What would you like to see?”

So if you have a compatible HMD download Destinations Workshop Tools for free, and VRFocus will keep you updated with any new information on the apps development.
