Last year CCP Games launched its first ever virtual reality (VR) videogame in Gunjack for the Gear VR mobile-based head-mounted display (HMD). Set in the team’s ever-popular EVE universe, the project impressed with its visual fidelity – marking the arrival of Unreal Engine 4 on the platform – and varied design. If you haven’t had a chance to check the title out on mobile VR yet, you may want to hold off a few more weeks, as it’s today been confirmed that Gunjack will be coming to the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive PC-based devices.

Gunjack is a first-person gallery shooter in which players are placed on the gun turret of a mining vessel and tasked with protecting the massive craft from swarms of incoming enemies. Over the course of around 20 levels players will encounter a wide range of opposing craft that mix up formations and attacks, with boss encounters also featured. Aiming is delegated to the respective HMD’s head-tracking tech, and players are also able to gather power ups that grant them special attacks and more protection.

On PC, Gunjack will be enhanced with better graphics and audio, updating textures, models and effects. There will also be achievements and leaderboards. Crucially, the experience will still be priced at $9.99 USD, as with the Gear VR version. It will hit the Oculus Rift first on launch day, 28th March, and is promised for later in the year on the HTC Vive, which ships on 5th April.

“We’re honored by the reception Gunjack has had so far and excited to bring the game to new platforms,” Jean-Charles Gaudechon, executive producer of Gunjack, said of the news. “Our goal is to push the boundaries when it comes to VR and immersion, and we really want to bring this experience to as many players as possible.”

Of course, this isn’t all CCP Games is working on in VR. Its biggest VR project, EVE: Valkyrie, will also be arriving on launch day for the Oculus Rift and coming to the PlayStation VR HMD for PlayStation 4 later down the line. HTC Vive support for the title is yet to be confirmed.
