Fans of UK-based Frontier Developments’ popular space simulation videogame, Elite: Dangerous, have enjoyed playing the full version of the title for nearly a year now. Over that time the developer has continued to improve and expand on it with new content and updates. The biggest update yet, Elite Dangerous: Horizons, is due to arrive soon, kicking off another season for the videogame. Recently, Frontier Developments has released a fresh batch of images for the upcoming expansion, which can now be seen below.
A total of four screenshots are on display, showcasing some of Elite Dangerous: Horizons‘ new features. One such addition is planetary landings, allowing players to touch down on some of the title’s many planets for the first time and operate land-based vehicles as they explore them. In one screenshot, a player can be seen approaching a mining installation, for example, where they may be able to gather some resources. Another in-cockpit image showcases a wrecked ship that can also be salvaged for cargo.
Elsewhere, a Federal convoy can be seen skimming over a planet’s surface in a canyon, while a final shot shows a player back in their ship and taking part in a dog fight just above a planetary settlement. All of these new elements will be available to experience with the HTC Vive virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) when a free update integrates the kit in December 2015. Support for the Oculus Rift has been included since the title’s launch but has been stalled somewhat by the rapid release of new software development kits (SDKs) by Oculus VR itself. The developer does anticipate bringing support back up to speed in the future, however.
VRFocus will continue to follow Elite Dangerous: Horizons closely, reporting back with the latest updates on its progress.
