Cycling the world – should be Europe but taking a detour in Africa: episode 110
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to cycle across Morocco in the winter? Well, I did it, and it was not as easy as I thought.
Continuing my global cycling journey leaving Missour, a small town in the east of Morocco, and headed south towards the Sahara. I had a map with some trails marked on it, but they turned out to be fake. I had to improvise and find my way through. Along the way, I saw some beautiful sights, camels and rolling hills. The nights were freezing cold, and getting out of my sleeping bag was a struggle.
The hardest part was when I reached a mountain range that I had to cross. There was no trail at all, and the locals told me it was impossible to go through. They were very kind and helpful, though. They escorted me through some narrow canyons and gave me a place to stay for the night. They also invited me for breakfast and showed me their hospitality.
The next day, I had to climb up the mountain to 2200m hiking up my bike. It was exhausting and painful, and I almost gave up when it started snowing. But then the weather changed and I saw the most stunning view of the valley below. It was worth it.
As I descended into the valley, I met two men on motorbikes who were waiting for me. They were the chief of the valley and his friend. The chief took me to the only compound where a Berber family lived. He asked them if we could stay with them for the night, and they agreed. They welcomed me into their home and treated me like one of their own.
The Berber (Amazigh is the more correct name) family was amazing. They sacrificed a sheep for me and cooked it on a fire. We ate skewers made with sheep liver wrapped in caul fat. It was something! We spent the evening in their kitchen, talking and laughing. They taught me about their culture and their way of life. They had no electricity or running water, but they were happy and generous.
This video is one of my favourites because it shows how incredible Morocco is and how friendly its people are and it also shows how bike travelling can take you to places you never imagined. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
