2016 has seen a number of institutions using virtual reality (VR) to celebrate artists work by giving viewers a closer, immersive experience. The Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, recently unveiled the Dreams of Dali VR experience, while the Royal Academy of Arts launched a special 360-degree online tour for Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. Now BAFTA award-winning agency BDH is celebrating the 500th anniversary of Hieronymus Bosch with a free VR app.
The app is based on Bosch’s surreal and mystical landscape masterpiece, The Garden of Earthly Delights. Bosch VR forms part of the 500th anniversary celebrations for the painter, running throughout 2016, held in the artist’s home town of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Holland.
Bosch VR contains three experiences, Garden of Eden, Garden of Earthly Delights and Hell. While the first is free the second and third parts do have to be purchased. They come as a bundle costing £2.99 GBP. Garden of Eden seats viewers on a flying fish, as it floats through an exotic, almost hallucinatory world of characters and creatures.
Lian Duif, Director of the Bosch500 Festival, said in a statement: “We are impressed by the authenticity of the experience and we are pleased to promote Bosch VR as part of our 500th celebrations of Hieronymus Bosch in 2016. This breathtaking app will enable Bosch fans all over the world as well as Bosch’s home city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch to enjoy his iconic painting.”
Production company BDH is already well versed in VR filmmaking. Their multi award-winning, animated virtual poetry experience, War of Words VR, was the first VR app made for the BBC. Bosch VR is available for both iOS and Android formats, with support of head-mounted displays (HMDs) like Google Cardboard and other similar headsets.
