Yesterday VRFocus reported on the launch of a new video from Oculus VR that took a look at the Oculus Touch position-tracked controllers for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). The video showcased the Toybox software that the company has been exhibiting with the device at various events around the world over the past 4 months. Now a second Toybox video has surfaced online, this time showing both the software and providing a look at the real world movements of a player using it.
This new clip is a little shorter than the other, but perfectly demonstrates how Oculus Touch is able to track and replicate real world actions. Using the pair of controllers players are able to reach into the virtual world, pick up objects and realistically interact with them. Examples he include stacking blocks, playing a game of Ping Pong, firing a slingshot and even lighting up fireworks. The software is multiplayer, as displayed by another avatar resembling a floating head and hands.
Oculus Touch itself is due to launch in the second quarter of 2016, placing it just behind the release of the Oculus Rift itself in Q1. Until its arrival fans will have to use an Xbox One controller to interact with videogames, which will be packed inside the Oculus Rift’s box. That said, many of the titles that are being lined up for the launch for the device will not target the first-person sense of presence that needs the controllers to full realise. Instead, many resemble third-person action experiences.
